Using The Internet As A Small Business Marketing Tool

September 7, 2009

You would not find any businessman on this earth who is not keen to acquire new customers and make his business grow.

Everyone wants it but only some become successful. Why is that?

It is simply because customer acquisition and retention is not as simple as it sounds.

Some entrepreneurs presume that their products and services would ultimately be known to their target customers through word of mouth or something as intangible as that. It hardly happens and even if it does, it takes an inordinate long period of time. By then, most of the profitability has gone down the time drain.

What could be the current most useful and strategic small business-marketing tool?

You got it right if you said the Internet.

To date, nothing as pervasive and as convincing has happened to promote small businesses as the Internet.

It is not an understatement to say that it has completely overwhelmed our existence. Today we use the internet not only to communicate faster, but we use it to search, buy, evaluate, share, inform and narrate our experiences with products, services, people and situations.

The Internet provides the most powerful small business-marketing tool that one can ever imagine.

To top it all, the Internet even provides the buyer to see and hear the products or services that he/she intends to use. A little short of going to the shop shelf to touch the product the internet enables the customer to take informed decisions on every aspect of a purchase.

The other small business marketing tools compare weakly on the face of the Internet. If you take the Internet as the larger umbrella, the other small business marketing tools can only be part of that bigger umbrella.

Take the example of SEO, e mail marketing, link building, joint venture marketing, article submissions, Craig list inclusions, social media marketing and the list of small business marketing tools can be endless – but all under the large umbrella called the internet.

There is special knowledge and expertise required to master many of the small business marketing tools that can be deployed even in day to day running of a business.

As a small business entrepreneur, you need not be a master of all, but the wisest thing to do is to learn the tricks of online marketing before you think of growth and success of your enterprise.

This is not to say that the conventional small business marketing tools have lost their relevance. Communication, customer care, after sales service, discounts and offers are still relevant as small business marketing tools. The only moot point here is that there is nothing that provides more cost-effective marketing solutions as the Internet.
